The Student English Forum in Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Purwokerto is commonly known as SEF. This organisation has been established since 1979 as a conversation club, a club for those who are interested in English and trying to master it. There were only ten member when it first began. Just like gypsies, they wandered around the campus because they did not have a proper office. Activities were conducted in different places, sometimes in the law school, sometimes in the economics faculty, etc. It was their spirit which helped them to survive.· Away back in 1983, the conversation club was formally inaugurated. Its official name "Student English Forum" was chosen then, and needless to say, the name stuck. The leading lights were Mrs. Sri Wahyuti, Mr. JB Soemarno, as well as Pat Mac Nally (he is now a “Romo” in Australia). Members were organised; organisers were trained. The vast influx of new members thretened for a while to swamp SEF! Even then, the chronic problems emerged: What programmes should they run? Where should they house their secretariat?.... In the end, after much hard work and many hard words, these problems were finally resolved by the institution of a twice-yearly conference and the temporary grant of the English Language Centre for use as a headquarters and secretariat. Adhenessa Suherman Sapri was honoured as the first President. Considering the obstacles we might find in our way, we need something to direct us, in each and every path we take. Therefore we have our Vision and Mission. Our Vision statement is “Don’t think we’re bragging our bouncing out of our beloved land but we’re just trying to get the feeling of English as it’s needed in supporting our tasks in the future, and we are not the best but we will try to give our best”. Mission statement is as important as our Vision our statement for us, because this will be the candle in our window during our journeys |
